Memorial University is confirming and defending the spending of more than $100,000 on an event that included a weekend retreat at the lavish Fogo Island Inn.

It’s a partnership between MUN, Norway’s University of the Arctic, and the Shorefast Foundation, whose founder and CEO, Zita Cobb, gave a presentation at the 5-star hotel that she had built on stilts. The forum is billed as a chance to brainstorm and develop partnerships to benefit both regions, with the guest list including ambassadors to and from Norway, academics, politicians, industry and non-profit leaders, plus a dozen delegates from MUN.

Despicable

Bet they will.

Intentionally misleading headline- half of the $100,000 was paid for by grants and/or the other attendees. MUNL's doing lots of wrong at the moment, but you have to get your foot in the door

This is just the tip of the iceberg of wasteful spending at MUNL. From pandemic 'work from home' policies that are de facto vacation days, to managers who cover it up, to directors turning a blind eye. It's been like this for years. Most employees can't speak up about it.

MUN is so entitled it’s sickening.

When I was a principal with the former Western School District, our retreats were held at Kildevil Lodge. We were required to carpool, slept in bunks in the cabins and cleaned our dishes after meals. We had great times and a lot of learning. 😁

There is no supporting that - shame on them - who do they think they are they spend our tax dollars to pamper themselves - it is time to stop this misuse of funds

MUN should actually spend a few bucks on that clock tower that never shows the correct time. As far as Fogo go's, knock yourselves out, you will all be speaking Hindi soon anyway. Namaste.

Not fit!

You’d think that people with that much education would be able to spend more wisely than drunken sailors.

Is everything corrupt in our province ❓

With a $100000 to spend on meet and great , we have university students going to the food banks

For how many people from MUN? Was it for 1 person or a couple of hundred on that bill?

Vivian!!!

The AG needs to do a deep dive into the spending and structuring at MUN like she did for Nalcor! MUN has become bloated and top heavy with a sense of entitlement. Change needs to happen!

Totally crazy students should be very upset that the tuition is being used for this type of spending.

Better to ask for forgiveness than permission, it seems. 🤔

Y & how? no Sin Jeans hotels need business, no room on Campus, arrogance is beyond...did Furey go as guest or did they invite Risley? Was Shameus invited as well as the other 5 FED LIBs! nlpoli Avalon709 rockdaboatNL rlegrow maybe a reward cause most who went didn't get $500!

Vianne gotta Get fishing bah sure we all knows .

Vianne Timmons has wasted way to much money since taking over. Ego much?

Going to have to fold it into the department of education to get control of what’s going on over there.

Leaches

If it was that important then there should be some proof of times in the past it has helped and if this time it doesn’t then it shouldn’t happen again. If MUN can afford things like that then they can afford to reduce tuition for students

Who or what division exactly provided the statement? “In a statement to VOCM, MUN says”? Why hide the identity of person proving info ? Was this a condition of providing a statement- anonymity?

The entitlement is mind boggling!

Thread hijack: Now imagine what happens when you have companies worth billions upon billions of dollars defending themselves against truths like vaccine injuries and deaths. Follow the money.

Making a mountain out of a mole hill. $57k fronted by MUN for one of these events to showcase NL as a destination for world class events is not a large sum of money. It's cheaper than a lot of weddings.

WHAT

🎪of 🤡🤡 is all that has ever run this province and ran it to the ground. We have beyond bs taxes. Universities just as corrupt has the govt. Corporate corruption, and give the people the pole on a consistent basis. They all wasting our $. Hold the 🤡 accountable. We're 🤢 of it

This institution of higher learning seems to do many things without considering the fallout. Do they really care what the public thinks?

I'd say that the timing of this story is not a coincidence

The article states MUN only spent around 55k on this. The article title is misleading… please correct this

I defended my boys golf trip where i got drunk for a week and lost my wedding ring and watch….but my wife had a different lens 🤷‍♂️

When it comes to Government money, someone always has their fingers in the pie. And no matter how bankrupt this province is, there's no shortage of pie for certain people.

They had to double new students tuition to pay for things like this.

All I can say is oh my while we all try too make ends meet . Lol

Unreal and everyone else having to tighten the purse strings. Are you serious?

She didn’t build the hotel either it was 10,000,000.00 tax dollars belonging to Atlantic Canada that she used not one penny of her money is in that building Acoa and her WEF friends in government owns it

They never learn.

Bit of a disingenuous headline. Almost half that amount was raised FOR the event.

We’re all outraged by this and countless other events wasting our tax $ by government or their proxies, but what are we doing about it. We keep electing people but don’t hold them accountable.

Bys must have been jealous of those cost of living checks. Needed to get a little extra slice of pie themselves.

MUN needs an open source audit

Is this satire?

If this was truly an arctic forum, then perhaps it should have been held in that geographic portion of the province that is near the arctic? Where they established a school of arctic and sub arctic studies in 2020.

No one is surprised, it’s a weekly update with the corruption and misuses of taxpayers money by this government. Over a $100,000 on a getaway while Newfoundlanders are suffering to stay warm and feed their families. Completely out of tough, the entitlement is sickening.

Did they sing the Verboten … Ode to Newfoundland .. that the Regents cancelled ! Mun needs a wake up

So how much will tuition go up to cover that trip!! I guess the Albatross was not really the same 🤣🤣🤣

Needs to be massive cutbacks to university funding by the provincial governement. Maybe then they would act more fiscally responsible. Though sadly they would probably just raise tuition.

LOL! It's all a big club, and WE'RE not in it!

All the Inn expenses are now paid up til spring 😂

MemorialU Your leadership continues to be out of touch with the financial reality & priorities (e.g., inadequately paid faculty) facing the University. Leadership continues to ignore the values of, & be out of touch with, the community you represent. Time for leadership change.

Wow. The sense of entitlement is amazing. It must be nice to have a public funded job with no limit on the expense account.

Omg 🥴

If MUN needs the help of Fogo to attract partners, maybe we need to think of why the institution itself doesn't attract anyone. Maybe it has something to do with the buildings literally falling apart, and the staff has been willing to walk for years. Fix the problems!!!

Sure they will defend it. You think they will say. No it was wrong. ? This is where someone needs to be held accountable for lavish spending on someone else’s dime. Yet the library is cold, leaks in roofs, mice in classrooms …but lets go to Fogo Inn. 🙄

VOCMBen Omg what a wonderful group of people that we having trying to run our provice.Make no wonder that students have to pay so much to go to university and then just look at the the govt members that went .They should all be ashame of themselves the way they spend people's money.
