“I am pretty picky with body care products so I always hope that if I create a product I find effective, others will also enjoy it. So far this has worked out for me. Fingers crossed that continues,” said Jennifer Myers of Ortner Brand Soap Company.

Jennifer Myers makes rescue balm at Ortner Brand Soap Company in Canning, N.S. - ContributedCANNING, N.S. — It all started with her never-ending hunt to find natural, cruelty-free and vegetarian-friendly products.

Myers grew up in Canning and went through school in the Annapolis Valley before studying biology and chemistry at Acadia University in Wolfville. She then moved to B.C. for a job opportunity, near where her father lived. During her time in British Columbia, Myers met her husband. Now, she says they both learn to make new products by researching online and watching videos. There is also a lot of trial and error, she says, and sometimes they can learn more from the hilarious mistakes than their successes.During the product development process, Myers also involves her customers as much as possible. If a customer has made a request for a specific product to be made, she gets them to help her test out new recipes.

“I am pretty picky with body care products so I always hope that if I create a product I find effective, others will also enjoy it. So far this has worked out for me. Fingers crossed that continues,” she says. “This sets me apart from some of the other soap makers in . My focus is always to make great products with simple ingredients that work well,” she says.In 2020, a Switzerland resident ordered a custom-made wooden box, built by Ortner, filled with their products as a birthday gift for a friend in British Columbia. “We sent the order directly to the friend in B.C. with a sweet little birthday note,” Myers says. “It was a wonderful birthday surprise for the recipient.

Myers is now making soap full-time and considers herself very lucky to be able to do so. Nova Scotia is a wonderful place to have a business as people are very supportive, she says, noting her immense gratitude.
