This week, my hometown of Toronto marked the one-year anniversary of a terrible, tragic day. On April 23, 2018, a rented white van was driven onto sidewalks in the northern part of the city. It was a beautiful spring day, and around lunch hour. People were outside enjoying the fresh air and looking for a place to eat. Ten of them were run down and killed; 16 were injured, many horrifically.
Consider, for instance, a statement released on the anniversary by Premier Doug Ford. “One year ago,” it said, “terror struck at the very heart of our capital city, our province and our country. In a series of shocking moments of evil, loved ones were lost and lives were shattered forever. This senseless and monstrous attack shook our sense of security and our identity as a free and peaceful society.
Toronto’s, or Ontario’s, “identity as a free and peaceful society” was not shaken. People were shocked and horrified — myself included — but life returned to normal for the vast majority of Torontonians almost instantly. The dead were buried, the injured treated, the streets cleaned up and repaired … and everything reopened. Life resumed its normal flow and tempo with incredible speed, and that’s a good thing. That should be celebrated.
