Matt Gurney: Scheer asked Canadians to trust him, while avoiding questions. Not a good look

Earlier in the week, I wrote here that the first issue that needs to be settled after the just-concluded election is what happens to Andrew Scheer. Does he stay or go? The rest of the minority parliament’s trajectory will hinge on that.

“I believe you can have both of those positions: you can have a personal view and you can acknowledge that in Canada, the prime minister does not impose a particular viewpoint on Canadians,” he said of his opposition to abortion and same-sex marriage.In other words, while it’s no secret where he stands, his personal opinions should be beside the point.”I believe that Canadians understand that any number of people can have a different point of view on these issues.

“I personally don’t worry much about what personal views are; I trust politicians to act in their own self-interest, and there’s no advantage whatsoever for the Conservatives to reopen debates on contentious social issues such as gay rights and abortion, not with supermajorities in the 75-per-cent range supporting both. … But Scheer can’t expect to get through an entire election using some variation of “I won’t change the law.” I believe him, but it’s not going to carry the day.

This needs to be a part of the Tory review of the campaign. I actually agree with Scheer, for the most part — a Canadian politician can absolutely hold private spiritual beliefs while also plausibly arguing to voters that they won’t try to put those beliefs into law. But making that case requires sincerity, clarity and transparency. Scheer did not offer that to Canadians, instead preferring to just sort of brush it off and change the topic.

mattgurney Unfortunately Scheer doesn't connect with Cdns. I understand why more credible Cons didn't run against him & Bernier for the leadership - they thought Trudeau was a shoe-in - but look where we are now. Cons need a new leader now preferably a progressive woman like Lisa Rait.
