But the substance of the new rules wasn’t the most interesting part. That was, by far, the refusal of the arrayed ministers and politicos to answer a pretty straight-forward question. Monday’s announcement was limited to Canadian citizens and permanent residents; nothing more was revealed about plans to allow other people into Canada, particularly at the U.S.-Canadian border.
That’s an important point — worth repeating. Normally, when a Canadian politician doesn’t want to reveal something, that’s just the default Canadian hostility to transparency shining through. Getting information out of Canadian government officials is routinely like pulling teeth — actually, no, I’ve had teeth pulled, and at least there was painkillers before and after.
Alas, the hotel quarantine model is the far more instructive example. Other countries figured this out early and used it to great effect. Our federal government ignored the issue for months, insisted it wasn’t a problem, looked at a poll that showed Canadians weren’t buying it, announced that they were going to do something, and then only weeks later, came out with some completely half-baked non-solution that accomplished nothing other than wasting a lot of time, energy and goodwill.
It’s looking more and more like the Liberals are using this pandemic to test how far they can manipulate and control Canadians. So far there does not appear to be any limit. Citizens of any other nation would be marching on Parliament Hill with pitch forks.
