A friend of mine, Cathy O’Connor, who is hard of hearing, calls masks “a necessary evil.”
When a further barrier to communication arises, your first thought is how it will affect you personally, not how wonderful it will be to help flatten the curve “Masks are a barrier to making connections to the community,” says Wissam Constantin, Vice President of Governance and Membership, Canadian Association of the Deaf. “Deaf individuals rely on facial expression in their communication as a fundamental of sign language. Masks will definitely [contribute to] more isolation within the deaf community, which can adversely affect the mental health of many.
The Canadian Hearing Society writes on its website that protections of human rights “require fundamental shifts in perception to appreciate that the limitations experienced by many deaf and hard of hearing people are not rooted in hearing loss, but in the barriers present in a society.
healthing_ca These masks are racist, xenophobic fascists
healthing_ca Really? Is this a place we had to go to? Did life just get a little harder for people who read lips? Someone tell them they can turn on the mic on their cell phones and get speech to text happening, mkay?
healthing_ca Always someone complaining
healthing_ca Neither does music
healthing_ca Well... Get on that.
healthing_ca so sorry, we considered the easiest way to save lives and did not consider the deaf. but honestly even if we had, we would have gone with masks.'the needs of the many ...' if you are deaf im sorry this is hard on you, but i suggest investing in a small white board and marker
healthing_ca so? there are options for dealing with that issue.. like writing out what needs to be said. Would they rather be exposed to the virus?
healthing_ca A COVID test requires a Qtip to go so far up my nose that my belly button gets itchy. But the virus spread during singing. Ya right!
healthing_ca No kidding.
healthing_ca masks do not curb covid. its totally unhealthy to breath in exhaled C02 back into your body. health 101.
healthing_ca
healthing_ca I have perfect hearing & speak multiple languages yet I’m having a really hard time understanding people speaking muffly through a mask.
healthing_ca Let me guess, masks are racist too now?
healthing_ca What accommodation are people with hearing issues who are unable to vocalize their speech doing in case they meet up with someone who is blind and cannot read text, or lips or whatever? I hope they are not leaving the visually impaired behind.
healthing_ca Soon it will be against the law to not know sign language
healthing_ca Od those with asthma.
healthing_ca Really? I mean really, how crazy are we gonna get.
healthing_ca Politicians hate taking advice, and it seems even the advice of medical experts.
