Nick Martini homered twice and drove in five runs in his first opening-day start, Frankie Montas pitched six shutout innings in his Cincinnati debut and the Reds cruised to an 8-2 win over the Washington Nationals on Thursday.

“We’ve known this guy can hit, so for it to all come out opening day and his first one, which us surprising or shocking when you think about it because this guy has been a good player for a long time,” Reds manager David Bell said. “We saw a pretty good sample of what he is able to do and why he is good.” matched his career high by allowing seven runs, giving up eight hits in four innings with six strikeouts and two walks.

“We need to come back strong,” Nationals manager Dave Martinez said."Opening day is always weird. A lot of adrenaline. We chased a lot of pitches. We didn’t do that in the spring.”
