The actress died at 83, just twelve days after completing her run in Three Tall Women at Stratford Festival’s Studio Theatre

She had a wicked taste for mischief. One of my fondest memories is of her Lady Bountiful, “homeopath and sex-therapist” in the Restoration comedygleefully brandishing a giant zucchini and rushing off to inflict who knows what atrocities on a hapless intruder. And she could be ruthless with herself; Cimolino recalls that in his production ofshe, playing the hero’s mother, spent a whole long scene kneeling on the hard Festival stage while pleading with her son to have pity on Rome.

Nor, in her first season and aged 24, was she restricted to walk-ons. Her debut role was Lady Macduff inand audience and critics fell in love. She was a barefoot enchantress, who sounded as good as she looked. Despite her looks, she was never an ingénue; she was a character actress. A turning point was her being cast, in 1968, as the super villainous Milady in; she plunged into full-blooded melodrama and came joyously out the other side. Something was released in her. She revelled, too, in the occasional low-life roles that came her way, Doll Tearsheet or the managing maids of Moliere.
