The NHL’s reigning goal-scoring champ participated in his first contract drills since undergoing wrist surgery in August.
Although the club has not placed a definitive timeline on Matthews’ recovery, his wrist is progressing well. Matthews has stated that he’s aiming to be ready for Toronto’s season opener on Oct. 13 versus the Montreal Canadiens. "It's about building up the strength in the wrist to the point that he's confident in receiving passes, leaning into shots, and of course faceoffs and contact. The fact we've seen him out every single day with no setbacks is a good thing,” head coach Sheldon Keefe said.
Matthews centred Mitch Marner and Nick Ritchie in line rushes, fired one-timers, and resumed his usual spot on the flank during the Leafs’ first on-ice run through with assistant coach Spencer Carbery’s new-look power play.Toronto has three exhibition games this week.
