There are only so many levers MapleLeafs GM Kyle Dubas can pull should the course of the team not be righted soon. Here's how he views the team through the first quarter. (reporterchris)

that the game Kyle Dubas identified as the team’s signature performance in the first quarter came more than a month ago.Yes, it’s a reminder that the second-year general manager is evaluating his team differently than a fanbase which is riding Leviathan on a daily basis. But it also hammers home just how infrequently the NHL’s most expensive roster managed to put it together during a 20-game stretch where it surrendered the first goal 15 times and won just six games in regulation.

“We need to take a step in a number of areas,” said Babcock. “We think we’re better individually and should be better collectively. Just talking about, though, isn’t [enough]. You’ve got to show it.” “I think when something doesn’t go our way — we don’t get a bounce or a puck bounces and it ends up in our net — just not getting back on our heels and continuing to stay on our toes and staying in attack mode and being able to deal with that stuff better,” said Dubas.

Dubas is basically limited to money-in, money-out transactions for the remainder of the season, and would likely have to remove a core piece to add anything of significance before the Feb. 24 trade deadline.

wyshynski reporterchris Babcock and kyledubas should be fired for this disgrace of a team

reporterchris He really does think we are all nieve!

reporterchris There is really nothing worse than Rogers and Bell 'reporting' on the teams they own. It completely lacks objectivity and treats every loss as a win.

Maple Leafs' patience will be tested after squandered opportunity - Sportsnet.caThis latest loss was a case of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, and it will test the patience of an organization that prizes process over results — a sensible philosophy to adopt, but one that has to be difficult to live by after banking just 22 points through the opening 20 games. NHL: Maple Leafs 4, Islanders 5Mathew Barzal opened the scoring and Anthony Beauvillier scored a pair of goals for the Islanders, as Toronto scored two-late goals to make things interesting, but Casey Cizikas' empty-netter would stand as the game-winner. This effort cannot continue. You don't start on time down 2-0. The players might be not listening to Babcock whi has a 8 year guaranteed contract. If that is the case he could be gone by Christmas replaced by Marlies coach Sheldon. Second and Third line not finishing Tavares has to show leadership and call a players only meeting. Johnny hasn't been good since his hand injury. Same old game plan down 2-0 in last three games. Babs eventually will take the fall if the players tune him out.
