Many Canadians remain detained in China; at least four on death row

While the release of the Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig is reason for celebration, there are many other Canadians still detained in China.

The detainment of Spavor and Kovrig had been largely viewed as a retaliatory response to Canada’s arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou on a U.S. warrant related to the company's business dealings in Iran. While Spavor and Kovrig were released from Chinese custody after 1,019 days, there are at least four other Canadians who remain in China on death row with little information on when or if they will return home.Similar to the cases of Spavor and Kovrig, Robert Schellenberg’s arrest is largely considered retaliation after Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou was arrested on extradition charges in Vancouver back in 2018.

In January 2019, Schellenberg’s sentenced was increased to death and was upheld on appeal in August 2021.

Don't feel sorry for the doper/drug smuggler. Wish there was stiffer sentences for these crimes in Canada also. Must be stupid to try to smuggle drugs in China!

You know many countries in the world execute people convicted of drug crimes. I don't agree with the death penalty period (even in the US) but without regard to my POV don't go to a country and commit a crime then expect Canada to save you.

It is absolutely hilarious China sentences drug dealers to life sentence or the death penalty. China is one of the world’s largest distributor of fentanyl and other such chemical drugs.

I love how the media doesn't have their facts right- The clown in the pic, he had prior drug convictions IN Canada, and was convicted in a country that has harsh laws. He was found guilty, lets not try to spin things and compare it to the two Micheals.

Just because our drug laws are lax doesnt mean other countries share Canada's public policy that everyone should either be high or servicing the drug industry. If addiction is a health issue here, then why no treatment facilities? Is our health care that shitty? Its all bullshit.

Paris didn't build in just one day, it took centuries to get there, we should be focus on the two guys who have been released and celebrate that piece of victory until we can secure the freedom of the rest of them. Now, it's not the time to complain or blaming anyone.
