Those are the words of the great, late labour leader Cesar Chavez. Through perseverance, through passion and, most of all, through non-violence, Chavez led farm workers to liberty, justice and better lives in the United States in the ’60s and ’70s.
Hamas does not know respect. It does not favour peace. This week, the civilized world watched in horror as Hamas and its homicidal brethren attacked Israel during the holiest week in the Jewish calendar. As Israelis slept, Hamas slaughtered innocents. It raped and rampaged throughout Israel’s south, kidnapping children, murdering grandmothers, going door to door to kill in cold blood. Thanks for signing up!The next issue of Your Midday Sun will soon be in your inbox.
CUPE’s leadership did not retract these terrible messages. It did not apologize for these harmful words. Instead, it doubled down. One of its leaders wrote: “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.” CUPE’s words and inaction — and the words and actions of too many others in recent days — enrages and saddens me. As a union leader for many years, I have learned that the truest and best path to peace is, as Cesar Chavez said, respect for all.It is also the opposite of what those of us in the union movement must always do — effect positive change, yes, but with non-violence. With determination. With respect and peaceful means, above all.
