TORONTO -- A Toronto family is speaking out about what they call the "utter uselessness" of Canada's hotel quarantine program where their 74-year-old father believes he contracted a coronavirus variant of concern and then spread it to the rest of the family.

“I can’t believe this is a Sheraton,” Haider recounts his father telling him. “They don’t have water – the hot water wasn’t working – the phones were down.” Everyone except Shah, who could not leave his home because of federal rules, went out and got tested.Still coughing on the phone, Haider, 32, said his symptoms started with a fever, a funny tickle in his throat and tiredness. His father, already living with only one kidney, fared worse.

Haider said he reached out to the hotel to notify them of his family’s situation, but the phone rang and rang with no response. He was cleared to continue his quarantine period at home after he provided quarantine officers with a “suitable” plan to isolate at home. “We are focused on cases attached to high-risk settings and variants of concern. In those instances, we conduct full case management including full contact tracing.”

It's also possible some in the house was already infected when he returned home. He could of got it from a family member as well.

Quarantine hotels are the 21st century concentration camps.

Should’ve stayed home in the first place

He was doing it wrong

He gave it to his family because he obviously didn’t isolate separate from them as he was supposed to. You can’t blame that on the hotel.

Very bad experience in this hotel. Nobody on duty.

The whole thing about quarantine is just for show. We all know that.

How did his family get it? Was he not quarantined from them and if not then they should have all been quarantining as well. Could you not have written a balanced article and used it to state required behaviour?

And this is why you tell Trudeau to F%k off

Wasn't the reason to prevent spread of covid if you unknowingly had it which he did obviously. Sorry about his family but it kept him fr spreading it to the public. It wasn't to protect him.

The system is broken because so many people are not following the rules! There are only so many medical professionals to go around. Quarantine officers are RNs. Stay home! Don’t travel! That was not an emergency situation!

Okay so I agree the 3-day hotel stay is BS but the man didn’t quarantine away from his family when he got home. That’s their issue. Who knows where he got the virus but had of stayed away from his family, they would all be fine.

No shit that’s why he is there. So no one else gets it’s. Not to protect him. How dumb are u people

ChoiceZnewZ Well infectious diseases are like that 🤦‍♀️

He must of had it before he arrived but was not detected when he was at hotel

😂Similarly, that's how the p1 variant got in. These measures just add to the struggle without solving the problem.

Even when he completed the 3 days he was supposed to keep quarantined from family till 14 days completed.

They tell you to continue to self isolate when you get home. We had a scare and had to self isolate. Masks in the house - sleep and eat separately etc. Did he get wrong info or not listen?

So you get Covid after being asked to not travel. Sorry, a tenant dispute is not essential. Are we suppose to feel bad for you? YOU put your whole family at risk!

Shouldn't the lesson here be that he should of listened and just not traveled?

Bulkshit, this covid-19 pandemic is nothing but a big scamdemic

Spent $1500 and didn’t follow rules!! Too funny!!

Should’ve had someone local look after his properties, or stay there until he was vaccinated.

Dont travel🤷🏻‍♀️

Smat

The number of people who don't know the home quarantine rules posting in this thread is shocking. You do NOT have to isolate in a closet when you are at home quarantine. You CAN share a bathroom. You CAN share common spaces. Actually read something and educate yourselves.

Hotel quarantine is ridiculous to begin with. High cost, gouging ppl. Stop all fights coming into Canada period. Implement rapid testing, get vaccines out stop hurting small biz. Provide relief to lock economy down for a bit we would have been better

CTV , this is the reporting we get from all the tax money you got from us ? How about some real journalism for a change ? Like why is Canada one of the worse countries in receiving vaccines, why is Trudeau getting away with corruption? And the list goes on ..

The question is, where did he get infected? In the hotel? Or more likely, on his international trip?

sorry but he should have stayed home. I am beyond sick and tired of people hopping on a jet and flying off ..... just stop now !

It seems he doesn't understand the idea that 14 days of quarantine are because even if you test negative initially, you may still have been exposed and not yet replicating enough virus in your system to test positive.

What a ridiculous article. Are you all out of worthwhile stories to write about?

Hmm, I guess he should have heeded the non essential travel order. None of this would have happened. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Blame falls on those who defy.

I think someone doesn't understand the concept of 'quarantine'.

And he’s absolutely 100% sure he got covid from the hotel stay? Not the international flight he was on or the country he was in. You “have the worst immune system” but u still travel anyway. Covidiot.

Too bad for him. If one believes his full story. Should have actually quanranteened after the hotel.

'...says he got COVID-19 anyways...' The wording suggests he thought being quarantined was to prevent him from getting COVID-19, which is absurd.

So staff or did someone in his family have it and not know? Sounds fishy how five days from the day he was picked he gets symptoms? Just saying let’s get a tracer showing hotel was the real cause or not. Shame on CTV news

you're still supposed to quarantine after your hotel test.... and there is no way of knowing which one of them got it first. he probably caught it from his school aged children.

So what it's his fault...

anyway, not anyways

Let me get this straight: he can go to Pakistan to settle a tenant issue but I can’t go visit my parents in New Brunswick.

What happened to Doug's statement about price gouging?

That's on him dont travel live with the guilt you infected your family, that was your choice own it, and dont blame the hotel you get checked when entered and leaving
