Man found guilty of kidnapping elderly couple from New York

The jury began deliberating a dozen days ago and quickly emerged with two questions: they asked if they could have a map of the area that covered all the significant points in the case and they asked for a recording of Sandra Helm’s testimony. Following those two requests, the jury remained sequestered for several days without asking any questions.

On Sept. 27, 2020, Sandra and James Helm, who were 70 and 76 years old at the time, were ordered out of their home in Moira, N.Y. and brought to a boat launch in the U.S. before they were smuggled across the border by boat through Akwesasne. They were held against their will for two days before the kidnappers realized the police were closing in when Martin was the first to be arrested in Akwesasne. The Helms were rescued in Magog by a Sûreté du Québec SWAT team.
