Building staff locked the glass doors to the building out of concern for their safety. Brandishing a hammer, the man smashed through two large glass doors to gain entry into the building. He chased after three women who ran from the lobby, said Victoria police spokesman Const. Cam MacIntyre. The women were not injured.
One resident of the building said she later talked to the concierge, who said the man threatened her, along with a woman about to take her dog for a walk and a cleaning woman. The concierge told the resident it was “chaos” as the man chased them around the lobby.Article content continued “When you wake up and you find out there’s been a guy attacking people in the lobby, I feel so bad for the people who were right there. That’s so scary,” said the resident, who did not want her name used out of concern for her safety. The 176-unit building is owned by Townline Group and residents began moving in in July.
Residents of the building were alerted that something was wrong when alarms went off and people were told to avoid the front door area. “People were huddling with their kids and their pets in this back area near the garbage bins,” she said. “Nobody knew what was going on.” Police officers were at the scene within minutes and arrested the man. He has non-life-threatening injuries from the glass and was transported to hospital for treatment and a mental-health assessment under Section 28 of the Mental Health Act. The man remains in hospital.
