What makes the situation worse is how severely stifled media competition is in Canada. Losing the CTV anchor job is one thing, but an underlying issue that makes LaFlamme’s departure all the more devastating is that her journalistic options are rather limited at this point — particularly when it comes to securing a similarly high-profile, high-impact and, yes, high-paying role.
LaFlamme’s prospects would be significantly better were she an American anchor of the same prestige. In the U.S., news anchors, journalists, and media personalities constantly reshuffle — sometimes by choice, sometimes not. Get axed from your primetime newscast? There’s an array of other newscasts, news magazine shows, morning shows, news-adjacent talk shows, as well as opportunities for special event coverage. These options exist in Canada, but they are just so much more limited.
The U.S. has an undeniable population advantage that will always result in a larger media ecosystem, but Canada’s limited competition is far from a mere population problem. It’s a choice. It’s a choice to barely enforce competition policy when it comes to media mergers and acquisitions. The four main Canadian broadcasters — Bell, Corus, Rogers and Quebecor — are products of multiple mergers, spinoffs and even more mergers. Yes, the American market is similarly dominated by four major broadcasters, but there is a more robust offering of secondary media options, and a thriving array of digital media.
CBC should be shut down.
Can’t wait for her new podcast lmao
They ALL WORK FOR THE WOKE, BELL MEDIA! Doesn’t matter where she works! They all speak one narrative.
She got a big payout. Retire.
