New from drivingdotca’s Lorraine Sommerfeld: People who steal cars and the owners who stalk them

Just when you started to think vigilantism was dead, we get two back-to-back stories of drivers prepared to go to any lengths to save their babies. And by “babies,” I mean their cars.

The tale is wild and wonderful. She tracked the thief through her credit card, which she had also left in her 4Runner, along with her purse, cell phone and wallet. In the 4Runner she left running. By leaving that credit card uncanceled, she was able to track where it was being used. Her cell phone also left a trackable trail. Thanks to the magic of CCTV, she’d already gotten a good look at who stole her vehicle.

This story hit the news as a merry romp between a spunky victim and the gang who couldn’t shoot straight. But that isn’t the story. The story is, a woman left her vehicle running unattended at a gas station, with her purse and phone in it, because she was only running in for a minute. I don’t care how hot it is, doing this so you can keep your air conditioning on is reckless and stupid.

Meanwhile, in Atlanta, Georgia, an idling BMW proved too enticing for another thief. Captured on security cameras, our thief, flying under the radar in red shoes and a red hat, circles the car, eyeing his surroundings. Despite there being witnesses about, he bashes in the driver’s window, hops in and attempts to leave. See, even if there are witnesses to something like this, if the car is already running, you only need a second to get out of there.

Petition calls on Ontario government to issue fines against people who complain to 911 about Amber AlertsOn all five occasions that Amber Alerts have been issued in Ontario this year, police forces have had to plead with the public to stop flooding 911 operators with complaints about the broadcasts Why isn't there an opt-out option. That seems like it would solve the problem. If you don't want to receive the alerts, you wouldn't. Simple. The people who call and complain are pathetic, imagine if it was your child. Taking your phone off of LTE will eliminate unwanted alerts. But I agree with stiffer penalties for 911 misuse.
