“It has been more than 18 years that I have served as Abbotsford’s representative in Parliament, and it’s now time for the next generation of leader to step forward and represent the residents of our community,” Fast said in a prepared statement. “I have asked our party leadership to begin an open and fair process to choose that leader.” Abbotsford West MLA Mike de Jong announced his retirement from provincial politics on Feb. 14 and said he had been approached to run as a Conservative candidate in the next federal election, but that he hadn’t yet made a decision.
