A nearly two-week-long labour disruption that has paralyzed cargo shipments across the West Coast could be coming to an end after the longshore workers union announced that it would recommend its member approve a four-year deal with the employers group. In a statement released today, ILWU Canada said there would be a “stop work” meeting on Tuesday to “recommend the Terms of Settlement to the membership.”
The announcement comes after the union’s internal leadership caucus approved the deal reached with the BC Maritime Employers Association. That pact — drafted by the senior mediator overseeing the talks, as ordered by Labour Minister Seamus O’Regan — was tentatively agreed to by both sides last week, but the ILWU said Tuesday that its leadership caucus wouldn’t send the deal to a vote by membership. It then announced Thursday that caucus would hold a new vote on the agreement.
