Local callers in Newfoundland and Labrador will need to dial 709 for all outgoing calls beginning in April 2023. - ContributedST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Local callers in Newfoundland and Labrador will need to dial 10 digits for all outgoing calls beginning in spring 2023.

Ten-digit dialling will be introduced in the province on April 1, 2023, meaning residents will need to dial the 709 area code before calling local numbers. Between April 1, 2023, and May 31, 2023, local calls that are dialled using only seven digits will get a recorded announcement reminding callers to dial 10 digits.The move comes following aby the CRTC that will also see 10-digit dialling come to northern Ontario and the three exchanges of Yellowknife.

Ten-digit dialling was tried in Newfoundland and Labrador in 2017 with plans to make it happen in 2018, but the CRTC ruled it wasn't necessary at the time,It has been our privilege to have the trust and support of our East Coast communities for the last 200 years.
