Urban forests consist of all the trees and shrubs found throughout a city. Aside from making streets more appealing and increasing property values, city trees help reduce pollution and noise, provide relief from heat, make cities more resilient to global crises and create habitat to support biodiversity. The next time you take a walk around Ottawa, look up. More often than not, you’ll find more trees in wealthier, whiter neighbourhoods than in poorer, diverse areas. It’s time for Ottawa to be more ambitious in its greening plan. Our study found broad support from Ottawa residents for improving the density and diversity of urban forests. This public buy-in will go a long way to ensuring their stability and sustainability over time.
