Her lawyer has always maintained that the interpretation of the act was wrong and that, under the law, his client was facing at most a $10,000 fine

Linda O’Leary, the wife of celebrity businessman Kevin O’Leary, is not facing jail time after all, the Public Prosecution Service of Canada announced Thursday.

Prosecutors said at the time that O’Leary, who was charged with careless operation of a vessel under the Canada Shipping Act, was facing a maximum penalty of 18 months imprisonment and $1-million fine. “After careful review of the act, the Crown determined that the PPSC’s initial position on maximum allowable penalties was not accurate,” Nathalie Houle, a spokeswoman for the service wrote in an email. The PPSC is now “of the opinion that the maximum applicable penalty for a pleasure craft’s contravention of s. 1007 of the Small Vessel Regulations is $10,000.00.”

Still, Greenspan said he isn’t defending the PPSC. “It’s not as if it took us a week, it took us an hour, or 45 minutes to feel confident that we were right,” he said. “And it’s taken them a month to realize that they were wrong.”

If Linda O’Leary has been charged with a crime involving the death of two people then no amount of money that millionaires are paying is sufficient as a penalty.

It's amazing what white wealth and privilege can get you.....

Normal Canadians now know what to expect for failing to follow the law on the water. Thanks to rich Canadians for showing the way !

of course not .. she is married to the rich and famous.. they get a get out of jail free card.. if she was drunk and caused these two deaths. she needs to go to jail. the public wants details.

People saying it’s an unfair verdict have no idea what they are talking about and are full of hot air. The boat she hit was unmarked at night. That’s brutal. Linda is also a victim here.

Who said that just works same for everyone....?

And we'd all want the same if we had his money so shaddddap!

Small fine only...ludacrous!

Small fine only....ludacrous!

Anyone of you whose never owned a boat, let alone know the rules of the water need to keep your mouth shut. This is a fair verdict all things considered. It’s not about money at all... And if you think it is, you’re wrong on many levels.

Does every vehicle accident call for jail ? Or just because it’s someone with money ? If they were not known , no one would be talking about it . Nothing to do with money

Sweet money.

?

Buying her way out of trouble.

This doesn't pass the smell test.

'under the act for commercial versus pleasures crafts' CRAFTS? That's just craft. A writer in a national paper really should know better

Two rich assholes....

Of course.

The vessel she hit was improperly lit. I'm surprised she's being charged at all. What was she doing wrong?

Must be a conservative judge

Shark tank ....

Wish I had that sort of money to be able to act with impunity. I wonder how much an accidental dead person is worth in fines nowadays.

There is no white privilege, only rich privilege.

Hubby will be making it up to her for a lifetime for being his fallgirl

How did she get away with that, oh I forgot, she’s rich.

Membership has its privileges.

Because she is rich....money always wins in the courts and live.
