If you took Bell’s claims at face value, then it would be outrageous, but he using false numbers and he’s not telling the the whole story..According to figures from the Ministry of Health, a hospital today is paid $506 per cataract surgery through what is called Quality-Based Procedure funding. This is the fee for the surgery, but many costs associated with performing the surgery are already covered by the hospital’s global budget.
Lest anyone think I’m picking on this good doctor, a now retired doctor, a little too much, Bell is leading a campaign against the much-needed reforms Ford is attempting to bring in. Using his extensive contacts in the health bureaucracy he argued against these changes before they were announced, and he’s used his stature and former title to argue against them since they were announced.
