The pandemic sent office workers from cubicles to the kitchen table, many aren\u0027t coming back and those who do aren\u0027t eager to take transit.

Last week I went to meet someone at Union Station in the middle of what we used to call rush-hour. Metrolinx reports that GO Transit riders now is at 50% of pre-pandemic levels, boosted in part by weekend travel being back up to 100%. That means weekday ridership remains below 50%. The Toronto Transit Commission reports that ridership is at about 60% of pre-pandemic levels. In Ottawa it’s at 56% in June compared to June 2019, but well below what the transit system was projecting for this year.

A recent survey by the insurance company Aviva showed that 18% of Canadians said their transportation habits had changed since COVID-19. The poll of 2,500 Canadians found that 54% of those who weren’t currently driving expected to be driving in the next year.Article content The lack of workers in Ottawa’s office towers is leaving many small businesses in the nation’s capital feeling the pinch.
