The Liberal government missed an opportunity to advance reconciliation with First Nations, former attorney general Jody Wilson-Raybould says in a new book, claiming “more could have been done” by the government that promised to transform its relationship with Indigenous peoples.
“I think that this government… had fallen towards the end of the mandate back into the place where previous governments have, in terms of managing the problem as opposed to taking a leadership role in what could be and will be transformative,” Wilson-Raybould told the National Post in an interview. To anyone hoping for new details about the SNC-Lavalin affair that saw Wilson-Raybould resign from cabinet last February, From Where I Stand will disappoint.
She also repeatedly urged First Nations to do more to prepare for self-government, frequently pointing out that many Indigenous people are afraid of what it would mean to live outside the structures of the Indian Act, and would rather have “the devil they know than the devil they do not.” “I’ve always felt that if you want or see something that needs to be done, you get involved,” she said. “And in order to achieve those solutions… that Indigenous people have been asking for, for decades, we needed to get involved at the federal level. And I felt that my voice wasn’t being heard, so I wanted do something about it.”
In a speech from April 2019, shortly after her ejection from the Liberal caucus, Wilson-Raybould spoke more candidly about her disappointment that the framework had fallen apart. “This is something that a little over a year ago I expected was going to happen imminently following the PM’s historic words in the House of Commons,” she said.

acoyne So she wrote a book eh?

Enough reconciliation, move forward, this insanity.
THIS is the face of one of Trudeau’s worst errors in judgement.
Beacuse the liberals are not interested in reconciliation except as tool to prove their moral superiority over the Conservatives. Once they have received the political support of First Nations leaders, they feel comfortable in ignoring the people.
She turned down the job to be Minister of Indian Affairs where she could’ve changed it for the better singlehandedly. And now she whines about not enough being done? What an idiot.
But she was given the chance to when she was given the role but she refused . If she accepted the post she might have been able to lead instead of just writing about what could have been
Like when they asked Puglaas to be minister of Indian affairs to advance reconciliation and she refused, threw a tantrum and tried to take down the government?
A good 'verdict'for Mrs Wilson Raybould is to win her seat in Vancouver in the next October elections and then,if possible,to reintegrate the Liberal Party.
acoyne I'd like to politely remind you, Puglaas, that you had a chance to advance reconciliation and dismantle the Indian Act, but you turned down the offer to be Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs. You could have been Canada's Nelson Mandela.
Trudeau definitely screwed her over but as justice minister she had a very pro FN’s agenda. I am glad she is gone.
Think about FORWARD in present world, don't be within narrow
Man, I'm tired of being forced to listen to this person!!
Who would read that trash?
Too bad Puglaas could not write a book about SNC.
