“There’s no question I’m interested in helping to rebuild the party, and I’m seriously looking at the leadership,” Erskine-Smith said in an interview Thursday morning. “All of that is unquestionably true.”Two sources with direct or indirect knowledge of the campaign told National Post that Erskine-Smith’s leadership announcement could come as early as the end of the week. The sources were granted anonymity to discuss internal deliberations freely.
Multiple sources told National Post Thursday that Erskine-Smith has already started building a campaign team and reaching out to fellow Liberal MPs and staffers to kickstart a leadership bid as soon as possible. One source explained that Erskine-Smith’s campaign wants him to be the first declared candidate and come storming out of the gate to create a “pincer movement,” a reference to a military manoeuvre in which forces choke out opponents by flanking them on all sides.
“I think a longer leadership race will encourage more people to get involved, and I think that can only be good for the party in terms of engaging new people and rebuilding the grassroot,” he said. “I think a lesson learned from the last round is that you just don’t want to rush these things.” He notably apologized in 2017 when Liberals abandoned their promise against electoral reform, voted against his party in 2019 in favour of letting the Ethics Commissioner testify to committee about a damning report on Justin Trudeau, and said in a speech in February that he was not convinced his government should have invoked the Emergencies Act to deal with the Freedom Convoy.
Good for him. The longer he stays under Trudeau's control the more his political career will suffer. At least he has the parts to speak up....once in awhile. Not nearly enough in my opinion.
beynate has an ethical compass. I don't how or why he stayed under despot Trudeau's disgraceful regime for so many years. Even though he's on the opposite end of the political spectrum from me, he'd be welcome competition in Ontario.
Its more the policies than it is the candidates.
Would be a smart strategy for he OLP. Not that I'd vote for the OLP, but many soft NDPs probably would.
