May 21: ‘The sacred cow of medicare is defended even when the system is collapsing around us.’ How would you fix Canadian health care? Plus other letters to the editor

: The contributors write that “we have a limited number of health care professionals,” and therefore any gain by the private sector is a loss for the public sector. That would be the “lump of labour” fallacy.

Most patients prefer to consult with family physicians when dealing with serious health issues. Primary care physicians are associated with lower overall mortality, fewer hospital visits and reduced hospital admissions and surgeries. Recent analysis shows that primary care delivered by health care professionals without the involvement of a family physician is less cost-effective.

But there are solutions. If Canada focused on supporting family physicians leading teams that include nurse practitioners, registered nurses, physiotherapists, social workers and pharmacists, we could ensure that patients receive comprehensive and timely care. Why don’t we examine health care systems in the world that work well and model ours on success? Australia, Singapore and Britain have functioning, cost-effective health care. Here is the problem: They all have parallel public-private systems.Derryck Smith MDWhile the number of family doctors in Ontario rose by 31 per cent from 2006 to 2016, the wait time to see a family doctor actually increased.

Lmao. Boggles my mind to see people who have no idea how our health care system works sit there and critique it and pretend they are experts. Shits broken No doubt. Certainly not the liberals who have ran away all the nurses and staff, that's for sure. Complicated and complex

Western democracies brought in universal Medicare. Canada got boxed in by Tommy Douglas who insisted that not only it be universal, but it had to be equal…easy to do in the postwar economic boom, but now we are faced with a funding crisis.

Cut the fat from Government, Stop pissing our bloody money overseas. Stop losing money on the U.S. trade deals (they're ripping us off). It's all about allocation. The money's there, we just need a smarter finance minister who's isn't prancing around the world being a deputy P.M.

Well a decade ago you would be shut down for daring to say it wasn't good and we should have personal choice. Today that sentiment is common. The system can't handle the boomers the way it is set up so two tier is inevitable.

Adequately fund it for a change

Trump may hold off on more endorsements for coming primaries, advisers sayRepublican candidates in upcoming primaries may have a tougher time scoring a coveted endorsement from Donald Trump, according to the former President's allies, who say he is feeling more risk-averse amid the deadlocked Senate GOP contest in Pennsylvania. Good idea. Maybe Trump should stick to what he's good at, like maybe practicing his little memory list: Man, woman, person, camera, tv... Too much winning brings out the fake news 🤣🤣🤣
