The general public might not know this but two separate requests for community consultation with regard to the Donkin Mine have been submitted to our provincial government. One was denied. One was ignored. It’s important that the public is aware of this because the safety and environmental issues are huge. If the Donkin Mine is going to be allowed to mine coal then we need to insist that proper mitigation measures are in place.
Keep in mind that Cape Perce, where the Donkin Mine is situated, is a globally important bird and biodiversity area and is also threatened by acid mine drainage. There are no appropriate mitigation measures in place to address acid mine drainage from the massive waste-coal piles that will accumulate on-site. The mine is allowing the run-off to drain into our coastal wetlands. This is deplorably inadequate.
And then we have workplace safety concerns. Prior to the mine’s recent reopening, the Donkin Mine operated for three years. During this time the mine experienced 14 roof falls, a methane fire, 152 warnings, 119 compliance orders, 37 administrative penalties and a series of provincial stop-work orders. In 2020, the mine closed due to adverse geological conditions. Those conditions have not changed in the past two years.
