Having six leading candidates – to say nothing of the 20 or so candidates who are still in the contest – is a lot for the public to process

The Democratic Party is fortunate – and cursed – to have so many rising stars and potential national leaders.

“Having 20 candidates makes it difficult for voters to get information and to see the differences among candidates, and it is especially difficult for people who are not following this too closely,” said Mindy Romero, a political sociologist at the University of Southern California . “A lot of people are waiting until this field narrows.”

Already a half-dozen candidates – including promising figures such as Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York State and Governor Jay Inslee of Washington State, among others – have departed the race. But many others have persisted with their campaigns, even after having been eliminated from the debate at Texas Southern University on Thursday night.
