As the seasons begin to change, nature lovers can rejoice as larch season has begun.

Every year around this time, people look forward to getting outside and seeing some of the more beautiful scenery nature has to offer thanks to the seasons changing and flourishing of our beloved larches.Alpine larches are a deciduous coniferous pine tree that grow throughout southern Alberta, mainly in Rocky Mountain areas.

The tree is especially unique because it sheds its foliage, says David Bird, an associate professor of biology at Mount Royal University. “Most evergreens keep their leaves year-round, but larches have evolved to shed,” said Bird. “What makes them successful in the environments they find themselves in is they tend to be more resilient in nitrogen-poor soils — which of course mountain areas, with the higher elevations, tend to be.”There was an error, please provide a valid email address.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.
