A lack of programs to certify lifeguards is contributing to the industry-wide shortage seen in Canada, a Toronto city official says. "The key contributor to this issue is a couple years of lack of certification programs, where the industry hasn't been able to really keep up with the development," Aydin Sarrafzadeh, interim director of management services at parks, forestry and recreation for the City of Toronto, told CTV News Channel on Friday.

Across the country and North America, cities are reporting a shortage of lifeguards, which has affected their summer operations. Many city officials and those involved in the industry cite a lack of certification programs amid the COVID-19 pandemic as the reason behind the current shortage.

Laziness and disinterest is fuelling shortage. Pandemic? 😂

Not fueled by pandemic. Goverment told everyone to stay home and paid them to do nothing.

It costs money and time to become a lifeguard. Plus the yearly recerts and emergency training. The job is a huge responsibility for what they get paid. They are first responders but paid only about a dollar more per hour than if they were in retail. What is the incentive?

Because you can’t use your phone. This is why there is a shortage and it’s not gonna change.

All Young Canadians: “No thanks, we don’t need to work in Canada. Trudeau is taking care of us” cdnpoli

Who wants to be a lifeguard today when people are drinking at beaches? Who wants to deal with that? Alcohol and water don't mix.

Well those chlorinated swimming pools needed to be closed to protect us from Covid for nearly two years. Where do you think life guards get trained?

Not mandates ?

My son is a lifeguard but took a tech internship because lifeguard pay is too low.

Lack of everything due to restrictions and lockdown - please don't tell me that we are now surprised.
