Kraft Heinz acknowledges its ketchup and mayo mix, called mayochup, translates to an insult in Cree

Mayochup, which was a crowd-sourced name, can mean something entirely different in some Cree dialects, according to linguists and Cree-speakers.

“ happens to match the very vulgar English idiom for extreme drunkenness, and so it begins to be used that way, at least around Moose Factory,” said Ogg in an email. Heinz spokesman Michael Mullen said the company has heard of the translation, which has caused a stir on social media. Mayochup hit U.S. shelves last year after a viral Twitter campaign to choose a name for the condiment, and bottles of it have arrived in Canada this month and will continue to be sold while supplies last.

so what ....is that news . where has our good reporters gone ? some made up name sounds like a word in an obscure language !

This product is an insult to many English speakers too but for a different reason.

Shit face 😂🤣 gotta keep the name at this point

Who cares if it offends 0.000000001% of world population?

It means shit face 😂 oh well, kinda funny to be honest

Oh man. These natives complain about everything and anything

Oh no.

they missing barbeque sauce in it :(

EVERYTHING IN LIFE IS B I,,,,,,,, BI LINGUAL, B I SEXUAL, WHY NOT BI ,, FOOD, HEINZ 57 VARIETY, SYNONYMOUS WITH US BEING 57 COUSINS THAT WAS QUOTE IN 1970 S,,,, THE OLD LADY QUIPS, PUT THAT XXXXX EVERYWHERE, CAN YOU GUARANTEE WE CN DO THAT ALSO, KRAFTY, EH

My mother's maiden name was Mayo and was hit by a ketchup truck. So insulting Kraft. I willing be suing for 1 gazillion dollars

Best line in the whole article: 'We have heard about the unfortunate translation of Mayochup in Cree, and the only thing we want our consumers, whichever dialect of Cree they speak, to have on their faces this summer is our newest condiment mash-up,” 😐😅🤣 Um. What?

French’s ftw!

Wtf is Cree?

As if Heinz hasn't insulted Ontario enough.

And the bigger issue is the obvious lie right on the bottle... Delicious? I think not!

Something else for Justin Trudeau to apologize for.

I’m sure Cree people have better things to concern themselves with then what the latest Heinz products name is... seriously get over it and on to real issues please.

Lol

Salsa Rosada 😱🙄 🇨🇴

Its an offense that this product actually made it on the shelves.

How lazy can you be that you cannot mix some mayo and ketchup Ha Ha Ha!!! 🤣🤣🤣

Good God come on ! Really ?

Oh brother..who cares?.

How about “hip and belly padding”?

Seriously

Hellman’s invented and the name is: salsagolf

It’s called Fancy Sauce...

Heinz you need to change the name to something else and stop insulting ppl

People are so easily offended. Most word might mean something else in a different language or dialect.

It looks like vomit

I thought I was the only one that loved that combo ☺️

Why are we still using Heinz in Canada?

Omg, call the language police. This is disgusting, a travesty of humanity. How dare them not check every known language before they used it. Good investigative work CP24.

Some people is sooo ridiculous pointing stupid things like that If you don't like it? simple, don't buy it

I’m more offended that they created this product.

its an insult in english too 🤮

You know the French word for seal 'phoque' is pronounced like the F word in English. There is a town called Fucking, Austria. Seriously why do people get offended over this.

Ketchnaise sounds better anyway

Have you really run out of interesting things to talk about? Alot of words in different languages have different meanings... nothing new here....

For a quick dip for chips or anything mix mayo ketchup and mustard together we did this in Trinidad all the time don't forget to add a Little hot sauce, so the concept is not that foreign to me.

Ketchup and mayo together is an insult in itself 🤢

I did an entire presentation on this product 20 years ago. Metchup. Much better name.

Obviously they never intended to insult anyone. I bet the most insulted are whites and it actual Cree people. Fucking liberal whites fighting battles nobody wants or needs.

I don’t see why people would even buy this. Anyone who mixes ketchup and mayo likely already have both condiments in their fridge. Having separate bottles of each is more useful.

just call it what it is, russian dressing.

Ummmmm? Did I read the last line correctly? Lol.

Get your own batch of fancy sauce! Ah it’s probably not good on fish anyway.

How about “ketcho” lol

Well that’s not good, but that aside; it’s the dumbest name ever. I am sure they could have come up with something that is better and actually makes you want to try the stuff!!

Canadians prefer Leamimgton based French’s made with Ontario tomatoes

Finally...

There are so many words in English and French wich translate in insult or 'foul language' in other languages....! There is a town in Croatia : Pula, which translates really badly in Romanian. Romanians never complained or asked the town to change its name. VOILA.

Lol 😂 it means ‘shit face’

Plus it’s gross

Boycott !

🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

Brutal marketing

It's an insult to both products two

Big Mac sause

It sounds gross no matter what they call it.

What are the chances. I find this to be quite humorous. Not that it is a cree insult just that they thought mashing up two names innocently happens to be an insult

Then change it. Mauditnaise.

Ketchyo is less problematic and sounds better

Well looks like they’ll loose the critical Cree-speaking demo in the condiments space.
