The unveiling of King Charles III’s official portrait was not the first to have mixed reactions from a critical public

Brittany Britto claimed in The Baltimore Sun that the grey-scaled painting lookedalmost anyone’s face, like a model’s face in a fashion spread.”The Obama portraits garnered a strong cultural reaction, emblematic of Obama’s presidency, and were also praised for being strikingly unconventional.

Prince Phillip sat for four one-hour sessions with Wright but the relationship between the artist and subject quickly soured as the painting turned more abstract and with less clothing than appropriate. Initially commissioned by the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce to celebrate Prince Philip’s 50th anniversary as president, the RSA instead chose to display aSir Winston Churchill speaks in Westminster Hall on his 80th birthday.
