It was the late heroics in OT from Kasperi Kapanen that got the MapleLeafs a pair of points against the ArizonaCoyotes. reporterchris with the early details.

Sheldon Keefe loaded up his top line with the three young cornerstone pieces — Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner and William Nylander — but the Leafs pulled this one out because of depth.

The Coyotes got a quick start while playing for the second time in as many nights, with Christian Dvorak finding a half open net to score in at 1:04 after Conor Garland’s tip attempt bounced right out to him in the slot. Zach Hyman got that back by working his way to the front of the net and having Tyson Barrie’s point blast deflect off his shin pad before the intermission.

That was a greasy goal against a hard-working Arizona team that did a nice job of taking away lanes in the neutral zone, especially against the Nylander-Matthews-Marner line. Carl Soderberg’s 14th of the season in the final minute of the second period put the Coyotes ahead 2-1 before Hyman tied it again thanks to a gorgeous spinning pass from captain John Tavares while on one knee.Get the best of our NHL coverage and exclusives delivered directly to your inbox!
