Robert Rogers will receive an automatic life sentence for second-degree murder. He was also found guilty of interference with human remains.

Often inside the courtroom throughout the trial, you could hear the crying of Cook’s mother and supporters. But she always came back.

, with the number of sharp force injuries too many to count due to their number and also the decomposition of Cook’s remains. But there was never a motive behind the killing offered during the trial. No evidence pointed to one – adding to the senselessness of this crime and this loss of life. Crown prosecutors Saara Wilson and Bob Morrison were pleased the jury delivered the verdicts of guilty. The defence argued that including these convictions with Rogers’ record – especially the attempted murder conviction – would be highly prejudicial towards their client and could also cause the jury to believe their client had a propensity for violence. As the defence read the edited criminal record during the trial, it left many of the Cook family supporters, including Cook’s mother, shaking their heads in frustration as they disagreed with the court’s ruling about the criminal record.

Later that day, after learning his truck had been set on fire the day before on the trail off of the Pitman Road in Yarmouth County, partial remains belonging to Cook were discovered by a family friend not far from where Cook’s truck had been burnt. His body was discovered two days later in an area off of the Saunders Road.

Teaming up with the family of Zack Lefave, who has been missing since Jan. 1, 2021, the two families – who have been deeply bonded by tragedy – held several public marches and vigil events to help further ensure that Colton and Zack remained on the minds of the public.
