There’s an argument for a \u0027diplomatic boycott\u0027 while our athletes wallop the commie rats

In case it isn’t part of your historical memory, it was a dangerous moment. For all their recklessness over the years, including surreptitious aerial combat against Israel over Suez in 1970, it was the first time the Red Army openly crossed the Second World War armistice lines. And coming less than two months after the seizure of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, it seemed to confirm that tyranny was on the march because freedom was paralyzed by self-doubt.

As for the Olympic boycott, Leonid Brezhnev and his ilk were also acutely sensitive to prestige because they feared they really were nekulturny barbarians extracting protection money with ham-fisted threats of low-IQ mayhem. And when westerners turned their backs in distaste, it hurt the regime by hurting the people, who saw that the global respect they also craved was as remote as actual meat in stores they could visit.

You see? In their hearts they know fear, regimentation and conformity neither get nor deserve respect. So there is great power in symbolic gestures.
