Eliminating the escalator tax on beer would be an easy, cost\u002Deffective win for a government that is accused of being aloof and remote.

But trying to convince voters that the government is trying to make their lives easier will be harder — particularly because Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland has already indicated her spring budget will be “mindful of our requirement not to pour fuel on the fire of inflation” and force the central bank to raise interest rates again.

A two per cent tax on beer, wine and spirits was introduced by then-finance minister Bill Morneau in 2017, with the additional proviso that prices would rise at the rate of inflation every year thereafter. Beer and other alcohol products are the only manufactured food products that are subject to tax rates adjusted automatically every year at the rate of inflation, absolving Parliament from voting on the issue.

The hospitality industry and brewers have lobbied Ottawa to freeze the escalator tax until inflation returns to the Bank of Canada range of one to three per cent, pointing out there are limits to rising production costs. Increased operating and raw material costs have already juiced prices — Statistics Canada says beer served in licensed establishments increased in price by 5.1 per cent in the year to December 2022, and by 6.9 per cent for beer purchased from stores.

Ivison never says no to a drink that’s for sure.

And don’t forget tobacco/nicotine.

Can Ontarians buy beer for a buck? Does anyone even remember that nonsense or was it just the flavour of that month?

Or end the milk cartel and roll back at least the last 2 regulated price increases. As much as I like beer, milk is an easy win

Alcoholic Anonymous is not happy.

They're tanking in the polls...so....

It’s borderline funny. With the inflation, some Canadians can’t afford food and take 3 meals a day. Meanwhile, the National Post is calling to freeze beer taxes 🤣😂

They do not care, though.

Tax the rich

Sounds like the SocReds idiocy when thrown forward to BC citizens facing massive cutbacks in Health Care, Social Services, and high unemployment in 80s.. 'We'll knock off a few cents off of a beer as laborers should enjoy a beer' I guess he meant the dam few still working...

Who the fuck cares about beer prices? What about food prices

What about freezing the carbon tax drives up the cost of almost everything?

The Liberal Tyrannical Government COULD throw away Bill C-11 but they passed it, instead, no consent from their citizens necessary.

They're more likely to create a $54M app that tracks your liquor consumption. Two drinks a week. (half kidding)

Loooool…that’s hilarious.

That rivals an Onion headline.

EDITORIAL: Never trust the Liberals on gun lawsThe Trudeau government’s now\u002Daborted attempt to ban certain guns is a textbook example of why it is not worthy of the trust of Canadians. You can leave out “on gun laws” 100% correct 👍. Literally anything they say is either a lie or a trick. They just want all guns gone. We know that.

Majority of Canadians determined to own a home despite affordability challenges: Survey - BNN BloombergMany Canadians remain undeterred from buying a home despite the soaring costs of entering the market, a survey from NerdWallet showed. Probably some good deals to be had in the next 12-18 month as foreclosures sadly become a reality for Canada. Why keep giving your equity to the landlords 🤔 There is also soaring costs of rent. Best course of action is stay home for as long as possible or leave Ontario.
