It was a lamentable spectacle, watching the once\u002Dadmired David Johnston, glassy\u002Deyed and defiant, struggling to see the obvious conflicts

In his mind, there is no question of his impartiality.But the facts suggest a far cozier relationship than is becoming.

Conservative MP Michael Barrett asked Johnston about his relationship to former justice Iacobucci, who Johnston sought out to provide a legal opinion on whether he was in a conflict of interest . Johnston said the former judge is a “life-long friend” who he has known since he was 25. In his opening statement, Johnston made clear that foreign governments, including China, are undermining our democracy in “hostile and clandestine ways.” He pointed to significant shortcomings in our ability to “deter, detect and counter” the threat.
