CanMNT coach John Herdman chatted with JohnMolinaro on the team's progress, Alphonso Davies and much more.

The Canadian men’s team hosts French Guiana in Vancouver on Sunday, and the Reds can clinch a spot in the “A League” of the inaugural Concacaf Nations League tournament with a win or a draw.

Sunday’s affair comes exactly one year after Herdman’s first game in charge of Canada, a 1-0 victory over New Zealand in a friendly in San Pedro del Pinatar, Spain. People only see what happens on the pitch, whether it was last March versus New Zealand or in the Nations League qualifiers, but there’s been a genuine rebuild in a short period of time to create a strategy, and then to put a structure around that strategy, not just for the men’s team but also influencing the Canadian soccer system. That meant getting out to the provinces, and talking to local coaches, talking to the MLS clubs and working alongside them to build relationships.

On the pitch, it’s been a little challenging. The challenging part has been understanding that you’re working in very tight and short windows of time against opponents that are difficult to scout, so I would say we’re not quite where I want the team to be at this stage. We’ve had games against New Zealand, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Dominica and the U.S. Virgin Islands – these are tier-two opponents. Also, I think our identity on the pitch has been loose in games.

So, it’s been a cultural shift at every level. We’ve recognized that if we just work in a silo with the team, we only reach a certain amount of stakeholders and people who can help the program to the next level. That’s why we felt it was so important to go into every province and talk to coaches, provincial officials, technical directors of clubs about our vision and the strategies we have in place.

Sir John A. Macdonald statue vandalized in MontrealVandals struck a Sir John A. Macdonald statue in downtown Montreal once again, spray painting the imposing bronze monument to the country's first prime minister early Thursday. Idiots. Maybe it should be left as is.. no cleanup. Just a sign explaining why defacing it is a social statement. Destroying momuments does not erase a painful history. Rather than vandalizing it, why not use it as a teaching tool. Teach a new generation what society learned from our previous mistakes.
