‘The circumstance today is that politics are spooking capital markets and we are prepared to step up and ensure there’s a future,’ Kenney told the Post

EDMONTON — Alberta Premier Jason Kenney says the investment climate in Canada has become so unsettling for private capital that it’s necessary for his government to start backing oil and gas projects, just as the federal Liberal government was forced to do in order to save the Trans Mountain pipeline project.

The premier had made the announcement Monday evening that his government would play a larger role in investing in Alberta’s energy sector in a pre-throne speech address to caucus and staff. It caught many observers unawares, but for Kenney, he says he’s “guided by core principles” and there’s a need to “deal with reality” at a time when, he says, economic problems are being caused by political decisions.

After 10 challenging months in power, Kenney said he thinks his government has hit a “fiscal sweet spot,” balancing the need to get the province’s finances under control while being mindful of a fragile market and chilled climate for investment. On Sunday, Teck Resources Ltd. withdrew its application for a $20-billion Frontier oilsands mine in northern Alberta, a major project that was expected to create 7,000 construction jobs and produce 260,000 barrels of oil per day.

Easy there JK. Oil companies didn't stop investing because they ran out of money, they stopped because no level of government in this country can set the ground rules and stick by them for more than an election cycle. Fix that and the rest of it will take care of itself.

So you want a new National Energy Plan? You could have said that from the beginning.

Great idea--nationalize the oil business. When are we going to elect leaders in this country with even a basic understanding of business? Instead it's just an endless series of greasy politicians at every level.

WTF?! Didn’t jkenney campaign on fiscal responsibility? In the months since he’s been elected he has literally been throwing our money away. Yes - tax payer dollars! It came off our cheque’s. We can’t afford any services but we can afford this? A war room. Billion $ payouts?

What oil projects? There are none.

That’s the only way to do it.

I'd rather spend the money we send to Kebec on Alberta oil and gas projects.

I bet Trudeau would be willing to sell you the Trans Pipeline JK!

Seriously? If we wanted a Premier to act like the current PM we wouldn’t have voted YOU in!!

As strongly as I support oil and gas, it’s up to the Oil companies to pay for their own projects. Either we 100% nationalize the industry and keep all the money or we let those companies sink or swim on their own merits.

People in both offices say the call went poorly ah yes because we know the 30 years of oil boom has helped them so much... He's right Kenney could not even wait one minute to have discussions with the federal government without going to social media. It is time to grow up and discuss issues before pointing a finger.
