When Clavet High School history teacher Jonathan Nickel decided he wanted to do a hands-on project, his Grade 11 students had no idea they would be digging a nine-metre trench in the mud.

This was Nickel’s idea with help from education assistant Shirley Salahub, wanting to re-create a trench from the First World War to help give his students perspective about what they looked like and what it took to dig them.

“With the pandemic we’ve been facing we’ve been encouraged to do things a little bit differently, and spaced, and outside of the class ideally. This seemed like a great opportunity to do something different.” After it was done, the trench was just over nine metres long and two metres deep, complete with many features seen during the war such as planks over the mud, a platform to look over the top and even some boots stuck in the mud.

”It was cold, we got muddy, and wet, and people got grumbly. It’s nothing like they would have faced, but it was a taste,” Nickel told CTV.

A whole generation lost. Ask a young person which way to turn a screw to tighten or loosen it.

Quite the exciting pull quote

That right there is teaching.

I don’t think future warfare will need soldiers to dig trenches. High tech wars most likely.

Ok

Every school kid should have to do this to appreciate the horrid conditions our troops endured imagine weeks in the mud and stench of dead bodies all around and ur only option was to go over the top and be gunned down and u think staying home because of COVID is tough !

That certainly shows what things were really like

Fantastic, this part of our history needs to be highlighted in the school system. Wish school had taught more about our history instead of the history if the USA.

Will the teacher get fired for this ;)

A well conceived project to simulate the conditions of that horrific war. .....Now , just imagine the reality. Lest we forget.

Safe

Good project, brilliant teaching

this will be super handy when manitoba invades

I guess that’s a history lesson, but let’s focus on teaching kids how to build things fix things or do they own taxes instead, things they may have to do later in life

Sure hope this teacher took some safety precautions in this fantastic idea as the liberal police are already passing judgment

What a great and probably unforgettable learning experience for those students in Saskatoon.

Cool but its not safe to have a massive mound of dirt right next to the trench..

30 ft long trench, wow!

Applaud Mr. Nickel's commitment to bringing history to his charges.

That doesn’t look safe.

Sanitizer, masks and smiles mark an unusual school photo day for a COVID-19 yearThe COVID-19 pandemic cancelled sports programs, curtailed music lessons and limited class mingling at St. Barnabas Catholic School, but it didn't cancel photo day. Well we won't know if they're smiling will we. I'm pretty sure not, they have nothing to smile about. Child abuse by the government. Sad.
