The time to start reopening it has arrived. And somehow the government of Canada is not ready.
While Mr. Trudeau’s government is dawdling over it, two Liberal MPs, Wayne Easter and Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, banded together with a U.S. Representative from western New York State, Brian Higgins, to call for government to start phasing in a reopening of the border – starting with dropping quarantine requirements for people who can show proof they are fully vaccinated.
Instead, on Thursday, the government increased the penalty for skipping out of hotel quarantine from $3,000 to $5,000. “COVID put us under house arrest. Vaccines give you mobility freedom. Or they should,” Mr. Hyder said. “What are we waiting for?” There are more practical concerns. There’s a question of whether a Canadian “vaccine passport” would be issued by the federal government and, if so, whether the provinces will share vaccination data with Ottawa. There’s also the issue of what documents from the U.S. and other countries would be accepted as proof of vaccination.But surely, Ottawa should have seen that coming. If they’re not ready after all this time, they’d better get a move on.
Just re-open the border to fully vaccinated! Stop the hotel quarantine for fully vaccinated! There is no scientific justification for limiting travel for fully vaccinated people! The people’s businesses and mental health are being ruined… Just have some common sense!

As an expat I would appreciate the end of quarantines but it is too late for tourist $. Folks have made their summer vaca plans and I can’t imagine anyone is planning to head to Ontario. EndTheLockdown openontario

Umm...no! Alot of Canadians have only had one dose or not even. With the Delta variant around maybe not a good idea and if the kids can't go back to school in Ontario why would would we invite the Anericans to visit. We can't even have a coffee on a patio!

Approximately 60% of Americans don't hold passports & more than 60% have never been outside their own borders. I'm guessing that the majority of American passport holders will get fully vaccinated. Let's start with a trial...Alaska cruise ships stopping in Victoria & Vancouver?

While I have no desire to travel yet I will only be going places that expect proof of full vaccination. Canada should expect proof before allowing travelers in just as the EU and other countries are doing
