A guaranteed basic income could put an end to the massive bureaucracies and complexities of the welfare state

Most private member’s bills die on the order paper, and C-223 will as well. But the possibility of Canada adopting a guaranteed basic income deserves more robust study.

Such heavy increases in taxation could deter investment and lead to higher unemployment, resulting in more people depending on a guaranteed basic income or other government supports and producing unsustainable deficits. And here is where we could take inspiration from Ms. Gazan’s bill. Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland could commission a task force on the costs and benefits of a guaranteed basic income. The task force could be led by an outside authority, or by senior officials in the department. There would have to be plenty of outreach to provincial and Indigenous governments, and extensive modelling of economic impacts.

The framework might be so unrealistic and expensive that it proves the guaranteed basic income won’t work. More likely, it would be embraced by one ideological side and rejected by the other.

globepolitics For 40 yrs, we watched feminists' inequality take political power & discriminate against males, as only women got political representation & government subsidies. Why do NDP & Conservatives let Liberal hate crimes destroy equality by refusing political representation for males?

Nonsense: Federal welfare rolls are the Trudeaupian version of heroin with them as the dealers and the rest of us as junkies.

DawnRoseTurner So far Ottawa is only interested in supporting wealthy people who don't need it.

You have to be kidding

Get rid of Trudeau

Funny. CDNs not interested in getting their hands dirty. 🇫🇮 did it first: 🇫🇮 has rent control, and other regulations that 🇨🇦 does not. No, 🇨🇦 thinks it can just cherry-pick ideas from other cultures without seeing that these fit into an entire system that we don’t have.

It's not supposed to replace existing supports, but instead, it would make them less needed.

I am all for trying it but I suspect it will just make inflation worse, if that happens that income will be like no income at all

globepolitics All I could think of was that ‘leaked Canadian memo’ which came out in Oct 2020 which predicted every stage so far. Basic income was on there, just before a huge economic worldwide crash… funny where we are at today eh, it seems the pieces are falling into place as planned?

And filling Income Tax for it.

It's time for Canadian's to seriously study where The Globe and Mail is getting their funding, and why they spew this misinformation.

Communism

The amount we pay out to people living of the system through the many different programs is more than we would pay if we eliminated them all and gave a guaranteed basic income. Child tax alone is insane.

Hell it’s time Canadians demanded it. Trickle down economics don’t work, and sorry to those who won’t understand this but your life should not be just about work.

Can you imagine a government doing something for the good of the people in need. What an amazing concept.🤔

Well the data is settled so I say we study the media and politicians reluctance to follow the science. Note: also see something called 'the covid'

How about we forget about studies which never go anywhere and put people back to work. Work seems to give people a source of income. Stop destroying large sectors of the economy . Just sayin.

To create more labour shortage and boost the inflation?

Because we are so rich, right?

This is the kinda data you might find in a NAZI death camp ? NOPE The Canadian liberals doing the math your gov wants the disabled to die. Net financial impact of providing MAID under the current legislation (Bill C-14) in 2021

Why not say $65,000 of employment income is tax free?

You ppl actually think welfare across the board is healthy?

scottsantens yes UBI is the way …

Sounds like we are headed towards Communism

It's time Ottawa put Canadians first for awhile. Period.

What do you want to study? Two years ago, plans were leaked at the start of the pandemic. Basic income, provided you get vaccinated. Done. Forget this whole nativity scene for and against. 😡

Mmm I guess you could increase cpp payments to make it fair for those who paid for the system…

How will this help people that have worked for 30years and paid into the system, only to find the cpp is the same as this proposal?

Look up the stats on basic income esp those who are bashing it. It works in every country it's used. Globally. So it will work here. You're closed minded and wrong. I do understand. But as I once was, you're still wrong.

As long as they don't penalize people for being 'married' I'm for it. Tired of others who cohabitate not getting a lower amount but, married couples do because they 'share a house' FT.

No. Because they’ll lock the working class in on a fixed income so that we stay poor while the rich continue to dodge taxes. Fuck (and I can’t stress this enough) that.

Would this be run by WE consulting..or just give brother and mom their allowance

No it’s time for Canada to get all these people back to work producing and selling Oil Gas and rare minerals for batteries and nuclear power. We need to stop being stupid!

“Basic income” wouldn’t work unless basic affordable housing and affordable costs for necessities were easily attained. The alternative would be to implement a basic income which would increase to match the increases of food/utilities/rent costs.

Or they could just spend about 30 minutes Googling how all the other country’s that have tried it on pilots and not one of them ended up making it permanent policy?

Ya, let's go bankrupt quicker!

No thanks. Won’t work. Will never work.

G&M is supporting basic income? You're all about conservatives. Some sort of diversion tactic I'm suspecting

LTC ODSP and OW in POO (Province of Ontario) is a discrace with consequences

We don’t need to give free money to people. Maybe to disabled and retired individuals but not to people capable of working

Canada present system of elections designed to favor wealthy and powerful, and it is devoid of any moral and ethical values needed to establish a progressively increasing taxing based on income. Lawmakers are puppets of the wealthy. TaxJusticeNet CanRevAgency CanadianPM

How about government fixes housing first?

Please no so many dead beats now !

Something about... those who fail to learn history are condemned to repeat it.

Difficult when your leader won't talk about basic monetary policy.

So then the basic income could pay for private health care?

Go and get a job,,help wanted sighns all over

I thought we had overcome the concept of indentured servitude in the colonies, but universal basic income in return for the popular vote may be a palatable option for our new class of patricians.

Basic guaranteed income only benefits those that choose to not work.

Yeah no. Just look at how logically, educated and sensible they’ve been with the pandemic… hard pass

We need a serious overhaul of healthcare first
