“Our boys and girls sacrifice their lives to help bring freedom to another country. That’s what we do as Canadians. That’s what my son did,' said Lloyd Smith, father of Pte. Nathan Smith.

The loss of his son hit him hard Friday, on Remembrance Day. He was worried about how he would hold up at the ceremony. Smith was also grateful for what was a perfect warm sunny day. Besides the crowd, there were a few moments that he said will stick with him: seeing his wife lay a wreath in memory of his son and hearing God Save the King and O Canada, performed by the Stadacona Band of Maritime Forces Atlantic.

It was an emotional say for Pte Smith’s mother. She said she was a bit overwhelmed when she laid the wreath at the cenotaph.Veteran Glen Luduc, who served as master of ceremonies, said he was also grateful for the big turnout and a beautiful morning.“We speak often of the dead of past wars, but we have to look at these young men and women in uniform today. They’re serving and making real sacrifices. Each of them has a story to tell.
