Is TikTok just lighthearted fun — or a portal for China’s meddling and spying?

The Chinese-owned platform has exploded in popularity since it was launched worldwide in late 2017, now claiming over a billion monthly users. Featuring an endless scroll of user-made short videos, it was the only social media app to grow rapidly in Canada in the last two years, oneBut as TikTok’s army of followers swells, so too do security-related anxieties about the platform, despite its light-entertainment content.

TikTok here says Canadian user data is safely stored in the U.S. and Singapore, and would never be provided to the Chinese government.by employees in China — where companies are obliged to hand over information and co-operate with intelligence agencies if asked. Meanwhile, a growing cross-section of politicians and government officials in the United States is warning of TikTok’s perils, as the Biden administration negotiates with the company on measures to protect American users.

But that doesn’t mean Canadians shouldn’t worry about TikTok and its links to a regime notorious for using the internet as a surveillance and censorship tool, some experts warn.David Skillicorn The company’s policies and security teams strive to limit access to data wherever employees are based, said the spokeswoman, though she didn’t respond to a question about whether staff in China, specifically, could view Canadian user data.
