With the ice now removed, a season of speed skating has wrapped up at the Digby arena but those who organized the sessions, and those who participated, are already quickly looking forward to the next season.
A speed skating club in Digby proved to be quite popular this past season. Registration will soon begin for the next season that will start in the fall to see how much interest there will be. Contributed “I really enjoyed the environment, the culture of the speed skating group. I always liked to go fast anyways,” recalls Nutall.
Nutall was hoping to attract about 15 skaters. Instead, there were 34 skaters registered with the club, representing various ages and experiences. “There’s another opportunity to meet people that are living in this community,” he says. “I think that’s the value it adds to the community and the groups of people and gives them ways to connect.”It can be challenging to get a program off the ground when it requires specialized equipment. Not just artificial ice, but protective matting and skates. Nutall has been working to secure grants to build the club’s stock of equipment and says the support of other Nova Scotia clubs has been invaluable.
Southwest Nova Speed Skating is hoping to grow even more. Nutall would like to see clubs in a few other communities so skaters don’t have to travel to Halifax to compete.
