The next oil sands battle? A decision on whether to approve the Teck Frontier mine is expected next week

Last Updated Thursday, February 20, 2020 10:34PM EST

A federal-provincial joint review panel found last July that the project would be in the public interest, even though it would likely harm wetlands, old growth forests and wildlife. “We want to be champions of an evolution of our Indigenous people to be able to have a balance between development as well as the traditional aspects of life,” said Weidlich, who is CEO of the Wood Buffalo Economic Development Corporation.“We want to ensure that our elders and youth are taken care of, just like everybody else, and the only way to do that is by being involved,” said Loutitt.

Fred “Jumbo” Fraser, an 82-year-old Metis elder, has lived in the community for his entire life. He says he’s already seen a dramatic difference in the land, even without the mine. Earlier this month, Kenney sent a letter to Trudeau hailing the project as the "model of environmental and social responsibility."

Anyone can find a few naysayers if they’re trying to promote a false narrative and you obviously went looking. Pretending there is a divide is an outright lie. All 14 indigenous groups signed on willingly. Now go act surprised and ponder why ALbertans want to separate.

This story seems to have brought out a few Albertan bigots & gullible Kenney supplicants.

Teck should get the go ahead.

Indigenous people are wearing buffalo hide clothes, I’d say they’ve adapted to the benefits of a “colonized” country. I don’t discount the horrific deeds of the past, but that cannot be undone. We move forward as one CANADA and do what is in everyone’s best interests

Get over it as it will be built

People in any community - indigenous or not - are always split in their support for any new development What matters is whether the decision was made in a democratically and that those holding the legal power on behalf of that community are the ones signing the agreements

Check and see if any of the leaders got a surprise check in the mail to be sure it's a fair vote or any of their relatives.

It will be all out war if that vile pos JustinTrudeau nixes this project!

When our liberal_party rejects the teck, then those roudy bunch of hillbillies in Alberta can wexit

Higher costs should kill Trans Mountain pipeline, opposition saysThe federal government bought the existing oil pipeline between Alberta and the B.C. coast, and an unfinished plan to twin it, for $4.5 billion in 2018 OMG! realDonaldTrump knows Piplies and costs and mountains. What's wrong with you all? He's a phone call away! BestPresidentEver Maybe if they didn’t oppose it in the first place, it would have got built using private money. What Blanchet says is of no interest to me. The Bloc Québécois only runs candidates in Québec. Therefore, its opinion on any national issue should be of no interest to anyone outside Quebec. As for Bucky and her 'activists', you are never of any interest to anyone.
