Ex\u002DU.S. girls’ gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar got more than 40 years in prison for sexual assault. In Canada, he could have been out in five

Earlier this month news emerged that Larry Nassar, the disgraced former sports doctor for USA Gymnastics, had beenin an altercation in prison. Nassar used his position to sexually assault at least 300 underage female gymnasts, molesting them in routine medical examinations while explaining that it was a clinically necessary procedure. For this, he received between 40 and 175 years in prison. “I just signed your death warrant,” his sentencing judge said at the time.

Nassar can be taken as a particularly potent exemplar of the differences between how Canada and the U.S. treat serial child sex offenders. Canada has had a few offenders whose crimes were similar to those of Nassar; adults who abused positions of authority to sexually assault untold numbers of young athletes over decades. Except in all of Canada’s cases, the offenders received sentences of only a few years. Watch the video or read the transcript below to learn more.
