Idea for an open fire ban in HRM snuffed out

HALIFAX, N.S. — A request to investigate an annual open fire ban in HRM during the riskiest part of the year was shot down in council this week.

On May 28, 2023 a wildfire roared through the Upper Tantallon area requiring an extensive evacuation and led to the destruction of around 200 structures . “How are you going to stop people in their backyards … and a lot of people enjoy that relaxation time to be out with a small campfire in their backyard.”Coun. Tony Mancini said there are a lot of complaints about open fires and smoke, but at the same time, there are a lot of people who enjoy their firepits and propane stoves.
