There is a verdict in the trial of the man accused of killing a Burnaby teen in 2017. Less than 24-hours after deliberations began, the jury has returned with a guilty verdict of first degree murder against Ibrahim Ali for the killing of the girl whose identity is protected by the court. Rumina Daya reports. – Dec 8, 2023The lawyer for a man found guilty of killing a young Burnaby teen girl is asking a judge to stay the jury’s verdict over unreasonable delays in getting the man to trial.
The body of the girl, whose name is covered by a publication ban, was found in Burnaby’s Central Park in July 2017, and he was charged about one year later. McCullough also pointed to the Crown’s 14-month delay in filing Ali’s direct indictment after his arrest, which is meant to accelerate the trial process by skipping a preliminary inquiry for the accused.
